The Butler and the Baker

The butler is restored to his position (freebibleimages.org).

Central Truth: Dream interpretations belong to God.

Scripture: Genesis 40

One day the pharaoh of Egypt became angry with his butler and his baker and threw them in prison. While they were in prison, Joseph was put in charge of them. One night, the butler and the baker each had a dream but did not know what the dream means. Joseph saw them looking sad and asked them why they looked so sad. The butler and the baker told Joseph that they each had a dream but there was no interpreter. Joseph tells them that interpretations belong to God and to tell him their dreams.

The butler tells Joseph that he dreamed of a vine with three branches that budded and blossomed and brought forth grapes. He had the pharaoh's cup in his hand and filled it with the grapes and gave it to the pharaoh. Joseph told the butler that in three days pharaoh will restore him to his position. Joseph asked the butler to remember him when he is restored because he was wrongly accused and put into prison.

The baker then tells Joseph his dream of three baskets on his head full of bread. Birds came down and ate all that was in the baskets. Joseph tells the baker that in three days the pharaoh will execute the baker.

Joseph's interpretation of each man came to pass. The butler was restored to his position and the baker was put to death, but the butler forgot his promise to Joseph and did not remember him.

Joseph in Prison

Joseph fleeing Potiphar's wife (picture from freebibleimages.org).

Central Truth: God is always with you even in difficult times.

Scripture: Genesis 39

The traders who bought Joseph from his brother sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, the captain of the guard in Pharaoh's army. Although a slave, Joseph prospered in everything he did and was elevated in Potiphar's household, but when Potiphar's wife cast her eye upon Joseph, she became infatuated with him. When she tried to convince him to lie with her, Joseph refused and fled from her, leaving his robe behind. She told her husband that Joseph tried to seduce her, so Potiphar had him thrown into prison.

While Joseph was in prison, God was still with him and he prospered. The prison keeper put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners and was never concerned about anything in Joseph's care.

Abraham's Promised Son

Central Truth: God keeps his promises.

Scriptures: Genesis 15

God promised Abraham that he would make him a great nation and give that nation to his descendants. Abraham believed God and obeyed him. God told Abraham that his descendants will dwell in a land that is not theirs for 400 years, but they will come out of that land and return to Canaan.

With this lesson, the children also learned some of the cultural aspects of the time of Abraham who was a nomad who lived in tents. Using the templates I found online, we recreated a scene of Abraham and Sarah recieving their promised son with their nephew, Lot, celebrating with them.

Jesus Died for Our Sins

A fun day in Sunday school class.

For the last few weeks, the children continue their study of the bible using the bible activity book, Uncovering Bible Treasure by Dave Strehler. We started with a look at how God created the universe and how sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, but God has made a way by sending his only son, Jesus. This week we returned to the story of Jesus's birth and how he died for our sin.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatever I command you." John 15:13-14

Christmas and the New Year

Throughout the month of December, the Tabernacle of Praise Children's Church studied the Christmas story. Each week we talked about different parts of the events that led up to the birth of Jesus, including the angels visiting the shepherds and the wise men who came in search of the Messiah. We finished our study of the Christmas story with a cute craft project I ordered from Oriental Trading Company. Every thing you needed came in the kit except for the glue. I suggest you have some Elmer's glue or wood glue on hand even though the description for the project says you do not need any. Above is a picture of a few of the projects done by the class.

For the new year, we began our lessons using Uncovering Bible Treasure by Dave Strehler with the story of Creation. We learned how God created everything from nothing simply by speaking. After our lesson, we had time to show our excitement about the coming year by creating a short video using the FX Guru app on my iPhone.
